Seed Starting and Season Extension
Nearly every seed-starting article begins the same way: look up your last frost date, count backward, sow. The instruction is fine. The assumption underneath it is not, and it is the reason so many gardeners lose a flat of peppers every spring.

Your Last Frost Date Is a Probability, Not a Fact
A published last frost date is not a deadline the weather agreed to. It is a statistical output: given decades of records from a particular weather station, the date by which the chance of a damaging low has fallen to some specified level.
The climatological datasets behind these lookups publish multiple probability levels for multiple temperature thresholds. You can ask for the date with a 10 percent chance of a later freeze, a 50 percent chance, or a 90 percent chance, and you can ask it at 32°F, 28°F, or 24°F. Those are nine different answers for the same location, and they can span five or six weeks.
Here is the part that causes the trouble. Consumer frost-date tools rarely tell you which level they are publishing. Some report the 50 percent date — the median, which by definition means frost arrives later than that date in half of all years. Some report a more conservative 10 percent date. Some interpolate between stations. Some are still built on an older period of record rather than the current 30-year normals. Two reputable-looking lookups can hand you dates weeks apart, and neither is wrong; they are answering different questions.

- An average last frost date will burn you roughly half the time. If your source publishes the 50 percent date and you set out tomatoes on it every year, you should expect to lose them in about one year out of two.
- Use the threshold that matches the crop. A light frost at 32°F kills basil and damages tomatoes. Hardened brassicas and lettuce shrug it off. Peppers and eggplant sulk at temperatures well above freezing.
- The station may not be your garden. Cold air drains downhill and pools. A low spot or an open valley floor can run a week or two behind a nearby hilltop or a city lot. Local observation beats any lookup.
- Treat the date as the start of a window, not a gate. Know your date, then watch the ten-day forecast and have cover ready.

Counting Back to Set Indoor Sowing Dates
Once you have picked a date you trust, indoor sowing dates come from counting backward by the weeks each crop needs to reach transplant size, plus a week for hardening off.

Sowing earlier than this does not produce earlier harvests. It produces rootbound, stressed transplants that sit still for weeks after planting while a later-sown seedling catches and passes them.
Soil Temperature, Not Air Temperature
This is the second thing most seed-starting content leaves out. Frost-free air does not mean plantable soil. Cold, wet soil is why early peppers stall out yellow, why melon seed rots instead of germinating, and why bean stands come up thin.
Buy a soil thermometer and read at seeding depth, mid-morning, for a few consecutive days. Useful minimums:
- 40-45°F: peas, spinach, lettuce, radish, onions
- 50-55°F: carrots, beets, chard, brassicas, potatoes
- 60°F: beans, corn, tomatoes
- 65-70°F: peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, squash, melons, okra
Warm-season crops set into 55°F soil do not die; they stop. Root growth effectively halts, and the plant is vulnerable to soil pathogens the whole time. Black plastic or a cloche laid down a week or two ahead raises soil temperature meaningfully and is usually a better investment than planting early. More in soil temperature and when to plant.
Light, Legginess, and Damping Off
Grow light or sunny window? A south-facing window in late winter delivers a fraction of the light a seedling needs, and the light arrives from one side. The result is stretched, pale, weak-stemmed plants. An inexpensive LED shop fixture hung 2 to 4 inches above the leaf canopy and run 14 to 16 hours a day solves it. Raise the fixture as the plants grow.
Leggy seedlings are a light problem before they are anything else — too little intensity, lights too far away, or plants too crowded. Warm nights make it worse. The fixes are more light, closer light, thinning to one plant per cell, and cooler temperatures after germination. Brushing the tops daily with your hand or running a small fan produces shorter, thicker stems.
Damping off is the seedling that germinates fine and then topples with a pinched, water-soaked stem at the soil line. It is caused by soilborne fungi and water molds — Pythium, Rhizoctonia, Fusarium — and the cure is prevention: a clean soilless mix, containers washed and sanitized, bottom watering, letting the surface dry between waterings, and air movement. There is no rescue once a tray goes down.
Mix Matters
Seed starting mix is fine-textured, soilless, sterile, and low in fertility. Potting soil is coarser and usually carries starter fertilizer, which can be too much for germinating seed. Garden soil belongs in neither — it compacts into a brick in a cell tray, drains badly, and carries the pathogens listed above. Start in seed mix, then begin a dilute liquid feed once true leaves appear, or pot up into potting mix.
Hardening Off
Indoor seedlings have thin cuticles, soft tissue, and no experience of wind or direct sun. Moved straight outside, they scorch. Colorado State's guidance on buying and hardening transplants describes the standard protocol: 7 to 14 days of gradual exposure, starting with an hour or two of full shade in a sheltered spot, increasing outdoor time and sun daily, easing back on water, and bringing plants in when nights run cold. Skip it and you lose a week or more to transplant shock.

Start From Seed or Buy Transplants?

The honest answer for most home gardeners is a mix: buy your four tomato plants, start the varieties nobody sells. Perennials are a different category entirely — strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, asparagus and rhubarb are bought as crowns, bare-root plants, or potted stock. Direct Sow or Transplant?
Direct sow the crops that resent root disturbance or grow too fast to bother: carrots, beets, radishes, turnips, parsnips, beans, peas, corn, and most greens. Cucurbits can go either way — they transplant only when young and handled gently.
Transplant the long-season crops that need a head start: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, brassicas, celery, onions, and leeks.
Season Extension
Adding weeks at both ends is mostly a matter of trapping heat and blocking wind. Penn State's guide to season extenders and growing fall vegetables and the University of Maine's extension publication on the topic both cover the structures in detail.

Two cautions. Anything sealed overheats fast on a sunny day even in cold weather — cold frames need venting, not just covering. And plastic touching foliage conducts cold straight to the leaf, so support covers on hoops.
Fall Planting: Count Back From First Frost
Fall planting runs the same arithmetic in reverse: days to maturity, plus roughly two weeks for the slowdown as day length shortens and temperatures drop, plus the harvest window you want, counted back from your first frost date. That date carries the same probability caveats as the spring one. Frost-tolerant crops — kale, spinach, leeks, carrots, brassicas — can be counted past it, and many of them improve after a hard frost.
